I am a father of three children in D49 schools, and I believe we must place a top priority on creating safe, supportive, and effective learning environments for every student in our district.

That means more than just strong academics. It means ensuring every child feels physically secure, emotionally supported, and intellectually challenged every single day.

We’re living in a time of rapid change and uncertainty. Student enrollment is falling, and educators are being asked to do more with less. Our students are growing up in an age of increased social pressures, mental health challenges, and technological distraction. Now more than ever, our schools need to be places where students can thrive.

As a school board candidate, my vision for safe and effective schools rests on three foundational pillars: physical safety, emotional wellbeing, and academic excellence. Each of these areas is essential, and all three must work together to support student success.

1. Physical Safety: A Non-Negotiable

The safety of our children is the most basic responsibility of a school system. Parents need to know that when they send their kids to school, they are entering a secure environment—free from threats of violence, bullying, or neglect.

As a board member, I will advocate for common-sense security measures that protect without over-policing, including secure entrances, updated emergency preparedness plans, and strong partnerships with local first responders. But safety isn’t just about preventing outside threats—it’s also about addressing issues like bullying and harassment head-on. That means enforcing clear anti-bullying policies, training staff to intervene appropriately, and building a culture of respect throughout our schools.

2. Emotional Safety and Mental Health: Supporting the Whole Child

A student cannot learn effectively if they feel anxious, unseen, or unsupported. Emotional safety is just as important as physical safety in the classroom, especially in today's environment.

We need to invest in school counselors, social-emotional learning programs, and staff training to recognize and support students in crisis. Mental health support shouldn’t be a luxury—it should be a core component of how we care for our students. Our district should strive to normalize asking for help, and every child should know that there are adults in their school who believe in them and will advocate for them.

We also need to empower parents and guardians as key partners in this effort. Families must be kept informed and included in their children's social-emotional development and challenges—not left in the dark.

3. Academic Effectiveness: High Expectations, Real Support

Once students are safe and supported, learning can flourish. Effective education starts with high expectations and rigorous standards, but it must also provide the tools and flexibility needed to meet every student where they are.

I believe in promoting excellence in the classroom while recognizing that students have diverse learning styles, interests, and needs. That means supporting strong core curriculum, expanding vocational and technical education options, and encouraging innovation in how we deliver instruction.

Great teachers are the heart of any successful school, and we must give them the resources, professional development, and respect they deserve.

Community Driven Success

As a board member, I won’t pretend that there are easy answers. But I will promise to listen, to lead with principle, and to focus relentlessly on what’s best for our kids.

Creating a safe and effective learning environment isn’t just a talking point—it’s a promise we make to our community and to the next generation. And it’s a promise I take seriously.

We owe it to our students to build schools that are not only safe, but also inspiring. Places where curiosity is sparked, friendships are built, and dreams take shape. Places where every student regardless of background can reach their full potential.

This campaign is about more than just policies. It’s about people—our students, our teachers, our families. Together, let’s create a future where every child in District 49 walks into a school that believes in them and equips them to succeed.

Thank you for your support, and thank you for believing in the power of public education done right.
