Hi, I’m Chris Harrell. I’m running for the Falcon School District 49 Board of Education, and I want to take a moment to introduce myself and share why I’m stepping into this role.
I’m a husband, an engineer, and a proud native of Colorado Springs (OK, we moved out here when I was 4 - basically a native). Most importantly, I’m a father to three amazing kids who are all part of the D49 family. My oldest, Will, just started 3rd grade. My middle child, Bennett, is entering 1st grade. And my youngest, Jessica, is about to begin Pre-K—I’m not sure how that happened, as I’m pretty sure she was crawling yesterday.
Running for school board wasn’t part of the plan. Like many parents, I was content cheering my kids on from the sidelines and helping with homework at the kitchen table. But after attending board meetings and learning more about how our schools are governed, I realized something: the choices being made today will shape my children’s education—and the education of thousands of others—for years to come.
That’s when I knew I needed to step up.
Why I’m Running
I’m running because I believe public service starts at home. I want to help create a school system where every child has the tools to succeed—academically, socially, and as future leaders in a rapidly changing world. And I believe I bring a skillset that fits the moment.
My background is in engineering. I earned a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from UCCS, with a minor in Math. I’ve spent my career in federal contracting, starting at the Naval Research Lab and NASA in Maryland before returning home to work with the U.S. Air Force. My work has taught me how to solve complex problems, think critically, and focus on results—not rhetoric.
That’s the mindset I’ll bring to the board: thoughtful, data-informed, and student-focused. I’m not interested in political grandstanding or culture war distractions. I’m here to do the hard work—reading policies, digging into curriculum data, asking tough questions, and making decisions that serve our kids and reflect our community’s values.
A Long-Term Commitment
Because my children are just getting started in their educational journey, I have a deeply personal stake in the future of D49. I’m not in this for a quick win or a political résumé booster. I’m in it because the decisions I help make as a board member will directly impact my family—and yours—for the next two decades.
This campaign is not about me—it’s about all of us. It’s about ensuring that District 49 offers a strong, well-rounded education that prepares students to thrive. Whether it’s literacy in the early years, expanded STEM and CTE options, or evidence-based policy across the board, I’ll keep one priority front and center: helping our kids grow into competent, capable adults.
